The Cheap Revolution aka The New Barbarians -

There is a great article at Forbes.com called "The New Barbarians." I'm reading it in print as "The Cheap Revolution" which is more descriptive of the theme. The article is mainly about how businesses are taking advantage of open source and plummeting costs of hardware. The conclusion is that Micro$oft, Sun, Oracle, Cisco and others are in big trouble as executives have left those companies in droves to be part of the new tech that takes advantage of open source and other innovations. To paraphrase, the best talent does not want to be part of creating 20-year old software from 15-year old software.
For instance, Chicago Mercantile Exchange switched servers over from from Sun ($300K each) to Linux ($4K each). New server processes a transaction in 1/4 the time.
