BoxTrapper? - 04-14-2004, 01:57 PM

This seems really useful. I have already used it on a few accounts. I have a bunch of questions though and will likely think of more.

Is there anywhere that has detailed information about it preferably with a list of questions?

Some of the questions I have now are:

1. Can it be used with an email address that is not POP3
but is at your domain and redirects to a default address?

2. Can you disable the confirmation etc. messages so they are not sent? I would like to do this so I can manually build my white/black/ignore lists without alerting whoever is on the other end I am using BoxTrapper.

The reason is that it is a personal account that friends, family and business associates send me email to. Unfortunately it also gets a good deal of spam. I do not want it though to email any of those I allow to email me and bug them.

3. Is there a good, preferably detailed with FAQ, site with information about this? I searched Google but didn't have much luck. I just found a bunch of forums with questions posted about it but none that wanted to know what I am asking.

Unhappy looks bleak for you... - 04-14-2004, 06:01 PM

as you probably already know, BugTrakker was made by Mu Tek
BugTrakker

They changed to a different site:
old mutek, redirecting and from what I can see on the new one are just interested in enterprise solutions now.
Offhand, based on what I see, I would say:

1. Can it be used with an email address that is not POP3
but is at your domain and redirects to a default address?

no. Just on the PZ account.
2. Can you disable the confirmation etc. messages so they are not sent? I would like to do this so I can manually build my white/black/ignore lists without alerting whoever is on the other end I am using BoxTrapper.
no - think that is how they 'trap' spammers.
3. Is there a good, preferably detailed with FAQ, site with information about this? I searched Google but didn't have much luck. I just found a bunch of forums with questions posted about it but none that wanted to know what I am asking.

since you've googled, you know the Mu Tek area is pretty dead. I'll keep looking, but think unless you find an archive, not much chance of that.

Please be sure to take my answers as educated guesses, since I don't have the faq on it either.

Sorry

Boxtrapper opens a black box of questions.

Heidi, have you found any more information?

My first (and far from last question) is:

Where are the blacklist/ignore/whitelist text files located? When I edit them, a form field tells me the file name where the lists will be saved (e.g., white-list.txt), but I can't find them. I am looking in /etc/boxtrapper.

And question #2:
As soon as I enabled boxtrapper on one of my mailboxes, all bounced verification messages from my shared server (mailer-daemon@serve.********.net) began showing up in my main username account. Is that how it is supposed to work?

I guess I didn't have my brain connected to my eyes

I am doing some studies on BOXTRAPPER (not bugtrakker - where did THAT come from?) and will let you know what I find out. ONe thing was, I was looking at my xcontroller, not x, cpanel skin.

Thanks, Idesign, for a new message to illuminate my previous fiasco.

Yeah I'm using boxtrapper on one of my accounts and I get all those bounces in my main mailbox too. Pretty annoying, since eventually it takes up a lot of disk space. I've tried using filters to automatically delete them but they had no effect.

I don't know if this is the ultimate solution, but I set up a dummy account on Outlook with the username for my primary Page-Zone account, which will access all of those bounce messages to *****@serve.wwwroot5.net. Then I created a rule on Outlook to delete from the server any mail sent to *****@serve.wwwroot5.net. This way those unrouted bounce messages will be automatically deleted from the server every time you check your e-mail.

Not sure if you noticed this, but the message you replied to is quite old. However, I was reading this thread the other night, since I had just set up boxtrapper and noticed these bounces going to my main account.

Here's my situation. The main account name was never intended to be used for anything other than accessing cpanel and ssh. My secondary account is the one I boxtrapped. My default address is :blackhole:

I boxtrapped the main account to ignore the bounces. So, I'm ignoring mail from Mailer-Daemon. I may go back and change that to ignore based on the subject.

Has anyone experimented with regex in their blacklists or igonore lists in boxtrapper?

I'm looking for a way to block something like *name@domain.com, but I do not want to block name@domain.com.

[^name|.*]@domain.com
which mean: NOT "name" OR "multiple anythings"

you may need to use slashes to enclose the expression
/[^name|.*]@domain.com/

I've found that you need to escape the metacharacters. For instance, this works in boxtrapper ignore list:

Subject \[None\]

That will block an email whose subject contains "[None]".

Another important item I've discovered is that even if you have an address in your white address, any mail that matches subject items in your black or ignore lists will not get thru.

Does anyone know if email filters (elsewhere in CPANEL) get processed before boxtrapper?

So far, it looks like Email Filters in cpanel do not get processed if you use BoxTrapper. If anyone knows otherwise...

I've been messing with spam assassin, box trapper, and every filter I can think of but can't get them to work like I want.

Either I'm too dense, or too particular, or a combo. Wish there were some easy instructions to help stop spam (easily). But then everyone would do it, huh?

happy new year to all!

I placed this in my ignore list:

from [^.*]nm@domain.com

It will match anything BUT nm@domain.com, when there are at least three letters.

How do you test regex? I'm using Regex Coach.
