Fantastico installs out-of-date Simple Machines - 06-29-2008, 10:57 PM

I used Fantastico to install the Simple Machines BB on one of my sites. (It is far above phpBB).

It turns out, however, that the version installed (1.14) is not the most recent (1.15) and there is no easy way to update. Fantastico does not offer an update and the update feature in SMB itself gives a 404. I tried other update methods from SMB and hit dead-ends there, too. Several hours wasted.

I also have learned from experience that if I install by Fantastico, that any updates not done via Fantastico can screw up Fantastico's understanding of the installation in future.

So, I'm stuck with an out-of-date installation. Does Fantastico self-update or does Page-Zone have to do that, and if so has the update been recent?

I don't like running known insecure aps.

Fantastico updates itself every night, if there is an update. I just double checked that server to make sure though and it is running the latest version.
I reinstalled it from scratch because after reading this post at their site I cannot believe the latest version is still not installed into Fantastico
SMF 1.1.4

After redownloading it fresh from the Fantastico site, it appears that 1.4 is the only version available. I'm going to get in touch with them and see what the problem is, since this wasn't a minor update, but a security update.

I did contact them, and am awaiting the reply now.

Here is what they say:
Quote:
Your helpdesk ticket has just been updated by mahendra

Details:
We will be updating SMF to 1.1.5 in the upcoming release (due shortly).
I notice their site is running the latest version. Apparently they don't use Fantastico at the Fantastico site

We have other measures in place to combat exploiting of scripts, and don't depend solely on updates. We can also lock all files in that directory from being altered if you want. It shouldn't affect the operation of the script but would definitely make defacement impossible.

Well, if I could even update the installed version myself without a hassle -- the SMB admin page on my newly installed BB has a link that flags the install as not current and offers to do the job quickly and easily, but won't work with this install -- after doing the original install with Fantastico, that would be OK, but I ran into vague permissions problems. Previously, after I did manage to upgrade phpBB manually some time back, when Fantastico was slow offering a critical update, I found after that the Fantistico control panel sorta disowned the installation and did not recognize the upgrade.

I can check it out if you send the login details to the admin section of the forum. I installed 1.1.4 on a test account and upgraded it through the admin section without any errors, which probably explains why there isn't major complaining going on at the Fantastico website.

Thanks, Jim.

Turning off the security temporarily for me did the trick. The update is done.
