Email 'cur' directory needed?

I have a directory named 'cur' in my mail folder -- and it's got a bunch of stuff in it. Do I need the contents? They seem to take up a lot of space.

The server you are on may use the maildir format. If so then you have something like
/username/inbox/cur
/username/inbox/new
/username/inbox/tmp
the cur folder holds most of your email. the tmp and new folder are used for processing your mail
