Angry Can't Send Email using our Page-Zone Hosted Account - 01-04-2006, 12:16 PM

Starting last week, we became unable to send email using our page-zone hosted account. At the beginning of this week, we are now unable to RECEIVE email from anyone in the office using the page-zone hosted account. I've circumvented the "sending" problem by creating earthlink accounts for everyone, so their email appears to go from their page-zone hosted email address, but in actuality is authorized by the smtpauth.earthlink.net account. However, we still cannot RECEIVE email from each other. Our emails seem to be going to outside email accounts, just not to our own email accounts. It's becoming a HUGE problem. My "paid by the hour" computer consultant can't figure it out, after spending 6 hours on it yesterday and a considerable amount of time last week. HELP!

Put in a support ticket asap. Until you get an answer, you coul dpost some details. What mail client? What settings in the client? What is the error?

FWIW: I am also using earthlink as my ISP. Earthlink is sure picky with my mail list (dada) which is a great program, but those with earthlink addresses get this message:
"This email included an attachment which EarthLink identified as containing a virus known as Malformed container violation."

Which is a bunch of &*&)^( - first, there is no virus known as "Malformed container" and also it causes fear and trepiditation (on-line version of shock and awe) for my receipients. The list is on wwwroot2.

I've gone round and round with earthlink, but have better luck talking to the wall.

I think earthlink has a thing against PZ servers or the mail setup. Do you get PZ mail with other addresses (i.e. non-earthlink routings)?

Symantic AV spits that out. Unfortunately Symantic will not say what exactly constitutes a "Malformed Container". Try zipping the attachment and also make sure that the email text does not have any lines starting with a double hyphen "--", that has been known to trigger the error.
It has nothing to do with PZ, its all Symantic.

edit:
use this link. It may give you a bit of info on what to change in your emails

thanks, Ronnie - 01-05-2006, 10:20 PM

I know it's not PZ. Also I have no control over Earthlink ISP which is filtering the message(s) and kicking them out for a "malformed container".

The symantec link appears to be for users to set their AV program which I don't know if any of the ELN people use. I don't. I use ZoneAlarm which is great.

I did see the "--" mentioned in googling, and will delete it in a future mailing to see if that is the culprit. Basic fault is with ELN, not PZ or Symantec for being so unresponsive to a problem like this.

Earthlink uses the symantic smtp gateway AV software. The link I gave you is so you can see the various configs and see if you can alter your emails and test so you can try to slide under the limits, whatever they may be. As you can see it is attachment size, number and other factors that may trip you up.

Thumbs up now I see it - 01-06-2006, 09:44 AM

now I see it, Ronnie: I was just thinking the Symantec stuff was the receipient, not ELN itself.

I have looked at all 143~ pages of the pdf, and I think I have either a relay problem - the newsletter is from my domain at PZ, and SMTP from either there or maybe my Earthlink account (don't remember how it is set up) or the "--" rule.

I've deleted the "--" item from the footer of the messages, so I will send another newsletter and try that easy way.

Thanks for the pointers and comeback.

Dick
