Default Email Account Cleaning - 06-30-2007, 11:02 AM

One of my accounts has 16,000 emails in the default account, even though unrouted email is sent to :fail:. How can I quickly delete the email in that account (/cur/ I think) without screwing up the configuration? Magic Mail Monitor chokes on it, and Hoarde and Squirrel require manual deleting and purging of many pages.

I have read Jim's explanations of :fail: and :blackhole:. My question is, how can I preclude all of the undeliverable emails responses from collecting in the default account? Is a chron job the only solution? The default account is not used.

Is there a large file in /mail/domain.tld/account/new/

Look through all the folders in /mail and let us know what you have.

Yes, that is where the large file is. MMM finally let me clean it out.

On another note, I set the default email address to :blackhole:, read Jim's warnings, and changed it back to :fail:. Now, all email sent to the default email address is bouncing. So, while I have achieved my objective, I don't know how or why. What is the CORRECT procedure for enabling and disabling the default email address.

On yet another note, another post talked about rvskin. Is that theme no longer available on PZ? Was it ever? It seems to be quite powerful.

You set the theme in WHM. Log in, then edit the account. You'll see rvskin listed.

It is not one of the available skins on wwwroot20.net. It must not be installed on that server.

Follow up: I may finally understand. It appears that the default email address may work even though it is set to :fail:, presumably grandfathered from a prior Cpanel. However, if the default is changed once and then changed back to :fail:, the default address is disabled. If it is to be re-enabled, it is necessary to enter the default email address back into the forward box. Can anyone confirm this procedure?

I think that you'll be better off if you set the default to :fail: ---

and leave it that way.

Think of the account name (you're calling it default) as your cpanel login only, and forget about using it as an email address.

I think I have this correct, but it is confusing, I'll admit.

If you created an additional email, maybe you set that to the default catchall. Now when you set default to :fail:, you only see routed mail in the original.

I think you have all of this straight. Default is a concept, but email is a service. When you set up a domain, there has to be a default (catchall) email account. So it is your login name.

I don't know why that would be. Maybe someone will confirm whether or not it is available.

edit: When I log in to WHM I see:

WHM 11.1.0 cPanel 11.4.19-R14378

at the upper right.

Ed, thanks for sticking with me on this. For what should be such a simple matter, there sure is a lot of confusion.

You said, "If you created an additional email, maybe you set that to the default catchall. Now when you set default to :fail:, you only see routed mail in the original." How can you set the default to :fail: and still have another email address? Isn't it one or the other?

Here's what I think I understood from one of Jim's usenet posts. Assume that there is an account for edwurster.com. The login is edwurst. There is a default email address edwurst@edwurster.com. A long time ago, all unrouted email to edwurster.com was sent to edwurst@edwurster.com.

Now, if the default email address is changed to :fail:, all unrouted email AND all email sent direct to edwurst will fail. If another email address is set up, such as catchall123@edwurster.com, and if CPanel is set to forward all unrouted email to catchall123@edwurster.com, it will be so routed, but edwurster will still be disabled. Finally, if all unrouted email is explicity set to forward to edwurster instead of :fail:, it will be forwarded there, and email CAN be sent directly to edwurst@edwurster.com.

At least that's the way I see it. It seems to work that way based on the testing I have done today. If I am correct, the confusion has arisen because apparently the behavior is different if the account was created some time ago. The reason I say this is that the account that originally prompted this thread had its default address set to :fail:, but it was FULL of bounced messages. When I changed it to :blackhole: and then back to :fail:, all email sent to the account name (default) email address bounced.

I see the same thing, but if I click on Modify an Account, pick an account to modify, and the pull down Themes, rvskin is not one of the available options. Am I doing something wrong or looking in the wrong place? It would not be the first time.
