Credit Cards, Merchant Accounts - 02-05-2005, 09:21 PM

For any of you in business, do you currently accept credit cards for payment? This is not necessarily a web hosting question. I know of other small businesses that want to accept credit cards, but the ongoing costs may not justify it.

Today I noticed a sales card inside a Dell brochure. I went to the site and it does look very interesting.

Any comments on costs they advertise? Do you use a similar vendor for your processing?

Since I deal with a very low volume of transactions, I just use paypal for both on and off-line credit card sales (through their e-mail invoicing) simply for ease.

Obviously not the way to go if you need a POS solution.

Good recommendation. Coincidentally, I was in my Paypal account this morning, and saw various methods for billing others. Very simple to do.

I have the same question and looking at similar vendor for processing. A few colleagues have suggested AuthorizeNet as gateway and using UnitedBankService.com or www.WellsFargo.com. $8 seem reasonable for AuthorizeNet

We use Wells Fargo POS. I'd recommend it. Also PayPal is good as far as third party processors go. For recurring charges its best to have the card number because third party processors make mistakes all the time, so you have to double check every transaction, and if you are spending the time double checking their automated process, you might as well just manualy run the charge. PayPal makes the least number of mistakes on recurring charges out of any that we have used. 2checkout makes the most mistakes. We had one person who 2checkout double charged $12, setting off a string of bounced check charges to the person, who then demanded we pay the bounced check charges. We paid them but it was the last straw with 2checkout.

I use both Paypal and a gateway Merchantplus There pricing is reasonable I dont use uberlite for billing though I use modernbill as I sell more than just web hosting. I woould prolly just stay with paypal but I had a few clients not wanting to use paypal for some reason so I had to add a credit card gateway. Merchantplus uses Chase Bank and Authorize.net.
