Question Content Mangement Systems - Which One? - 11-13-2005, 05:18 PM

I see we have a choice of content management systems available for free install using Fantastico.

I played with pPHP-Nuke a bit, and glanced at the others.

I'm wondering if anyone has given them all a good checking out, and if any one is head and shoulders above the rest?

mambo and PHPwebsite - 11-13-2005, 05:49 PM

mambo and PHPwebsite are some good ones, depending on your specific needs. SMF is an excellent board.

I used mambo for a CMS, but it was too advanced to explain to client; I think it is good. PHPwebsite is excellent - a secretary at the client adds the daily/weekly stuff. The coders even upgraded and made it easier since I installed it, but I am terrified if I upgrade I'll lose some vintage stuff.

Each has good documentation and demos on their website, reachable by click on links in Fantastico installer page.

I used Mambo for nahare.com. We're not adding much content, since it is more of a static web site. I used Mambo so that I could get it up and running quickly. I just modified the headers. Later on I added the RSS.

Mambo has a lot of themes available, and there are a few forums where you can get help, like mambers.com.

This site has many demos for you to try: http://www.opensourcecms.com/

Thanks. I think this site will keep me busy for a while. In the meantime, I'd like to hear any further comments -- pro and con -- about the various CMS people have tried.

As a starter, I tried installing a PHPNuke test site and was getting along fine until I set up another administrator and we started customizing. Seems we both submitted changes similtaneously (we were sitting across the table from one another), and the site disappeared. The only way I could get it back was to delete and reinstall it.

Hmmm. The search continues.

Allen,

I started with a Mambo site early this year and have added a couple more. When Joomla evolved from Mambo, I made that conversion to one site and I'm very pleased with it.

I think it's strength is allowing one person (or few) to deal with the technical end of the site and a group effort to add content. With all the modules/ components available, it covers a lot of needs.

Here's a Testimonial from a "kid" that bought a Real Estate script as an add-on to Mambo/Joomla.
...if you're over 50 (like I am) I hope it makes you smile:

I do have to agree with his quote though. I used this HP component to show auction items for a benefit site I built. It allowed several of us to add items and descriptions as well as news articles through a "front end" protecting the site's Admin functions from us 50+ year olds. :-)
