How Do You Recover Your Password - 05-22-2007, 01:29 AM

How Do You Recover Your Password to this forum?

I can only access this forum from the one computer that has memorized it.

My other computers don't know the PW, and neither do I, moreover there is no, "I forgot my password" link that I can find, and the forum will not show any posts to anyone not logged in.

I imagine this includes prospective customers as well as frustrated present P-Z clients.

Hi Allen,

The window vBulletin returns when you punch the wrong password has this link to get back into the forum. (see screenshot)

The email comes to you from mail@page-zone.com with the subject "Your login details for P.Z. Low Cost CPanel Web Hosting"- just tested it now.

Well, that is what you get, but here is what I get, and I'm sory I can't give you a thumbnail, since the forum bolluxed up when I tried to upload it (on the one computer that allows me into this forum) and I lost patience.

Anyhow my window looks the same as yours, but has different (annoyingly friendly but totally unhelpful IMO) text:
Quote:
"Hey there!

It appears that you've exceeded the maximum number of posts you can view, but wait, there's a simple solution. To unlock the forum and continue viewing messages, all you need to do is sign up for a free account. The entire process takes just a few minutes so create your account now and view as many threads as you like!

Already a member? Login at the top of this page to stop seeing this message.".
The interface offers no means of doing anything except registering -- as someone else, I assume. And no, I did not get to read even one message before getting the annoying message! Arggghhhh!

Ironic, isn't it that I had to be able to log into this forum to read your message to me? The notification email only contains a teaser line.

Good thing I had access to a computer that stil remembers the forum.

I've seen that message too and just found out if I try any username and password in that screen- vBulletin brings up the "Useful Message" again with the link to Lost Password Recovery Form.

I've looked around the vBulletin settings and don't spot any other solution for a user to reset their password. A forum moderator can lookup the registered email address of a username and force that same "Reset Password" email back to that registered address. That was my next step, if we didn't hear back from you on the forum.

I don't know why I see the message I do, unless the forum is set to reject all non-registered access, even for reading. I could see it for posting, but reading, and when I have nopt even or read seen one post?

FWIW, I still do not know my password, which is remembered in the old computer, and have no access to all these very important messages on my new one without doing a workaround or hunting all over in old email on the chance I can find it. If I did find it, I probably have several P-Z support and forum passwords, and have no idea which might be current, so trying them all would get me kicked off.

I'm getting tired of workarounds and general fooling around to do things that should be simple and intuitive, like read the public forum.

At any rate it is very annoying, but thanks for looking into it.

Here's a copy of the message that vBulletin sends:

Quote:
Dear cmyksteve,

You have requested to reset your password on P.Z. Low Cost CPanel Web Hosting because you have forgotten your password. If you did not request this, please ignore it. It will expire and become useless in 24 hours time.

To reset your password, please visit the following page:
http://www.page-zone.com/forums/login.php?a=pwd&u=more stuff here

When you visit that page, your password will be reset, and the new password will be emailed to you.

Your username is: cmyksteve

To edit your profile, go to this page:
http://www.page-zone.com/forums/prof...do=editprofile

All the best,
P.Z. Low Cost CPanel Web Hosting
If you'd like me to lookup the email address that's registered with your account and kick one of these Password Reset messages back to that address, let me know. I'm not sure if a moderator can force this message to an address that isn't registered with vBulletin, but I can look around if you'd prefer that.

Thanks, but it was working just now. The gnomes that power P-Z must have heard me muttering.

The only way to freely browser through the forums without logging in is to make your browser appear as if it is one of the major search engines. That's also becoming the norm, if you've noticed google searches end up at pages requiring you to register in order to read what google somehow indexed without registering. You either need to set your browser to look like google, or go back and view google's cache of the page.
