WebDAV - 06-03-2003, 10:09 PM

Anyone familiar with this? I'm looking into it because I may be setting up some collaboration. I asked a WebDav guru for some explanation of it which I've pasted below. I'm not sure if this is something I can do on PZ or not. One thing he says is "It's also possible you might be able to convince your local ISP to set up a WebDAV server."

*******************
WebDAV is a network protocol, a standard way for two computers to communicate.

To use WebDAV collaboration features, you need client and server software that supports WebDAV. In your case, you have InCopy and InDesign, which both already support WebDAV as clients. So, you still need a WebDAV server. There are many WebDAV servers available -- Apache is one open source server that you could use, though it's tricky to set up. Sambar server http://www.sambar.com/ is perhaps easier to set up, and is relatively inexpensive.

Yes, WebDAV works over the Internet. You need to create a space on the server which is password protected, then hand out username/password pairs to all collaborators. Then, you use InDesign and InCopy directly against that space you've created.

WebDAV builds on the HTTP protocol, so it doesn't use FTP.

Thanks. I had actually already read their FAQ. That was the guy I emailed whose response I included above. For some reason I'm still having a hard time grasping the nuances. I get that if my client and I were in the same office we'd install this WebDAV on our server and then we'd both put our files there and be able to collaborate. What I'm needing to understand is in my situation I want to collaborate with off-site folks. So will it work to install WebDAV on my own PZ server space? If so, is this something that is already available to us or that Jim would install ? Or am I going to have to figure it out? I guess I need to go back and read more about it. I was hoping maybe someone here would have first hand experience with it.

Have you asked to PZ about install webdav ?

I think webdav will be a standard feature in the hosting packadges on next 1 or 2 years.

Webdav, have some advantages over FTP, SCP and sFTP. Can include encrypted file transfer, extended your hardrives/desktop, file sharing server, etc.

You could use it as you say but its proper use is for you ~both~ to be editing the same file. Thats the "colaboration" part.

So did you get it working?
