Question webalizer Logs - 06-19-2003, 05:48 AM

I have been looking through my webalizer usage logs. The only thing that I am unsure about is in the referrers section 'item 4 Hits 92 5.36% - (Direct Request)'
with no web address, is this me accessing the site or is this someone linking directly to an image on the site?
If it is some other site linking directly to an image will just changing the image names cause their links to fail.

If I remember correctly, thats a direct request to the default page of the site. So if someone typed in: http://www.yourdomain.com it registers a hit to "/"

Hi martinktech

You basically asked two seperate questions:

1. Direct Request means that someone typed an address directly into their web browser rather than following a link from another page (or a search engine...)

Ie: typing "www.whatever.com/page.html" into browser = direct request but clicking "www.whatever.com/page.html" on Yahoo would show as coming from Yahoo.

2. Hotlink protection.

If you are worried that people are direct-linking images or media on your server it's really easy to use cPanel to turn on "hotlink protection" which stops that.

Just look for "hotlink protection" and turn it on, I think it's under "Server".

Much simpler than having to install a Mod_rewrite in your .htaccess.

Hope this helps.

When I had "hotlink protection" enabled AOL users couldn't see any of my inages. People with a real ISP had no problem seeing them.

Cheers

You can try looking up "mod rewrite" and "direct linking" on Google, there's lot's of scripts to stop direct linking... but since that's essentially what the hotlink protection does, it may be that AOL does not properly support server headers. Like HTTP_HOST.

Anyone know of a workaround?
