advanced guestbook templates - 08-02-2003, 09:18 PM

Hi,

I'm just wondering if this is a write permissions problem and what to do about it ???

I'm trying to edit the template files in advanced guestbook and I keep getting the error:

Warning: fopen(./templates/body.php) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: Permission denied in /home/fox/public_html/guest/lib/admin.class.php on line 180

Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/fox/public_html/guest/lib/admin.class.php on line 181

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/fox/public_html/guest/lib/admin.class.php on line 187

Because I am such a rookie at this php stuff, I haven't a clue where to find "line 180" etc., and what to do to it if I do find it!

If anybody can help, I'd greatly appreciate it . . .

Thanks,

Faith

try highlighting the file in your FTP client and right clicking it. maybe the menu has a chmod entry. if it does a little window might popup and have some check boxes. three vertical sets of three maybe.
from the left
the first column is the owner, in this case, your username
the second column is the group
the third is called other, it means anyone that happens along
Now, each column has a read,write, execute box
this is a math thing now
read=4
write=2
execute=1
so 777
means read, write,execute for all-what a folder in the web dir needs to be written into by a script
400-means only you can read it and must chmod it to 600 to read and write or here is a good one, 200 to write and not read.
664 means you and group can read/write and web surfers can view it. 660 and they might not get to see it.
A cgi file needs to be execuable by every one, readable by everyone, writable by you, the script owner so you need a 755, if the script itself gets edited by another script it need to be writable by the script user which is the server(group) so you would need a 775

check the boxes you need and click OK

This is all if you use WS_FTP, if not your window may not be as described but you should be able to figure it out.

Thank you, I'll try it. I really appreciate the lesson--I learn so much with every one of these 'fine messes' I get into!
Thanks again,
Faith
