Default Email Address

Each domain name has a default email address. There is also the option to configure the default email address (:blackhole: or :fail:) such that improperly addressed email is not received in the default account. However, is there a way to reject ONLY the improperly addressed email and NOT reject email that is properly addressed to the default account?

For example, assume that the default account is jim@page-zone.com. Normally, mail sent to that address or sent to anyaddress@page-zone.com will go to the jim@page-zone.com account. However, if the account is set up for :fail:, mail sent to either "jim" or "anyaddress" will bounce (I think). Is there a way to allow "jim" to be received, since it is properly addressed, while allowing "anyaddress" to bounce? I think not.

No. It's all or nothing. If you need to use the default account to receive mail, you'll need to setup a different default account.

This problem drove me nuts when I first signed up with Page-Zone. Only after entering a couple of support tickets did I ever figure out what was going on. This behavior is different than what I was used to with my previous setup.

Setting the default address to :fail: will indeed cause all valid email to the main email address on the account to fail as well.

In my case, I set the Cpanel default address to :fail: and stopped using the main email address on the account. Instead, I created new/different email accounts that I use to access my email. I also created several forwarding aliases that point to those "real" addresses.

Now, all email going to one of the valid aliases or accounts get sent, but email to any invalid alias (or to the main address on the account) fails. This approach seems to be working fine.

I don't know of any way to "change" the main email address on the account, so I don't think there's any way get invalid addresses to fail or bounce EXCEPT by discontinuing use of the main email address.

If you go this route, remember to change the administrative email address on the account to something OTHER than the main account address. Otherwise, all notices from Page-Zone will fail as well.

Isnt the default email address the username@
if you want the username as an email address then choose a different username. After all, its only a username. Dont know if this can be done after the fact, but something to think about when setting up a site.
