Wrong server but domain still functions - 10-12-2003, 10:56 AM

All my sites (including one that's gone missing without trace on WHM) are registered with dotster and point to these name servers

NS1.FTPROOT.NET
NS2.FTPROOT.NET

These names were given me by Jim 18 months ago.

All my sites function but I'm told that these servers do not belong to PZ - so how the hell do my sites work?

My email comes from *******4.net. So I assume that's where all my domains are. The problem is, if I alter the name server, will my domains continue to be available. Given the support at PZ these days, what would YOu do?

Lightbulb here's a dig... - 10-12-2003, 02:26 PM

Looks like Jim Snape (our Jim) owns it: see the dig:
Query for FTPROOT.NET type=255 class=1
FTPROOT.NET MX (Mail Exchanger) Priority: 0 FTPROOT.NET
FTPROOT.NET SOA (Zone of Authority)
Primary NS: ns1.FTPROOT.NET
Responsible person: jsnapehsd@earthlink.NET
serial:1048577415
refresh:28800s (8 hours)
retry:7200s (2 hours)
expire:3600000s (410 days)
minimum-ttl:86400s (24 hours)
FTPROOT.NET NS (Nameserver) ns1.FTPROOT.NET
FTPROOT.NET NS (Nameserver) ns2.FTPROOT.NET
FTPROOT.NET A (Address) 216.180.243.202
FTPROOT.NET A (Address) 216.180.243.202
ns1.FTPROOT.NET A (Address) 216.180.249.173
ns2.FTPROOT.NET A (Address) 216.180.249.174

The dotted-quad address of:
FTPROOT.NET A (Address) 216.180.243.202
gives a whois of: (among others)
NS1.*******4.NET

Looks like you may be on root4 server.

What would I do? I'd wait for s support response before changing any dns. Just my 2 bytes worth.

I think your 2 bytes worth are right on the money.
When I did a whois on the domain it came out as someone dad or daddy as I recall.

Exclamation that's the registrar... - 10-13-2003, 01:47 PM

Jim used GoDaddy as the registrar to get the domain...

While a lot of people like and use them, they are at the bottom of my registrar list for some less than helpful antics they pulled two years ago on a 'stolen' domain name, forcing me to change domain names for a client. Long story.

I use DirectNIC which has been excellent service. Guess that makes four bytes....

Well that's inflation for you,

I used Dotster who seem to be OK.

Your 4 cents and I raise you 4

I love GoDaddy. Nothing but exceptional service. They are also taking the lead on protecting everyone from the antics of Network Solutions. It's a good company with good people working there.

Hello,

I have brought this issue to Jim's attention. Sorry for the wait, I'm sure he will address this issue as soon as possible.

Interesting, thanks.
Does this mean I should change the namerserver pointer at Dostster or leave it as is?

No reason to change it. We also have another 2 sets of nameservers on that server ns1&2.dns_sa fehouse.com and ns1&2.page-zone.com

It just means you have been a customer for a long time. Ever since we were resellers for MCHost. We had three reseller acccounts and used those nameservers. You were on their miami server but we combined them to one of our own. Most people didn't notice the move because it was a simple change of IP in the nameservers.
