Question Subdomains and DNS - 03-05-2004, 02:02 PM

#1. When I run a DNS report on one of my domains, I get:
WARNING. The parent servers (I checked with TLD2.ULTRADNS.NET.) are not providing glue for all your nameservers. This means that they are supplying the NS records (host.example.com), but not supplying the A records (xxx.x.x.xx), which can cause slightly slower connections, and may cause incompatibilities with some non-RFC-compliant programs. (x being my domain IP)

......and a whole lot more. Mostly about access and speed of access.

#2. When I check a newly created subdomain, I get:
No report, because the sudomain could not resolve. [ERROR: The parent servers say that the domain news.mydomain.com does not have any NS records (although they may have some other information on that zone). I can not do a DNS report on a hostname (such as mail.example.com) or a domain name that does not have its own zone.]

I added the subdomain through CPanel and I am not sure what I have to do to resolve this. I know that several ISP's are not alowing access to IP's unless they have a valid NS.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix both problems?
Thanks and take care, Sharon

I dont believe there is anything to worry about.

The warnings can be ignored. Most are time related and the rest are mostly due to virtual domains and the addressing scheme.

#1 basically says that you have a shared IP. But you say you have your own IP so I may be wrong. Maybe a check with tech support is on order on this one.

#2 says that you dont have an IP for your subdomain and therefore cant resolve the domain name. Which is OK as sub.domain.com is not a true domain name unless it has its own zone, which a complete set of DNS records.

I checked my domains and I have a few warnings but nothing that would worry me much.

For many ISPs, what you say would hold true. But, I have heard, that there are several ISP that expect a strict adherence to the NS rules. And users of those ISPs will not be able to access my subdomains.

This is something that needs a support ticket. Let us know what you find out.

As Ed says, you probably should put in a ticket.
