?? about index.htm - 05-25-2004, 02:02 PM

I don't know how to word my question exactly. sorry!

I'm trying to use the entropy banner on my main page, which is index.htm. index.htm is redirected to my site www.mysite.com. for the banner to work, I need it to be index.shtml I have saved it as such, but I don't know how to get that to redirect to the first page of my site.

I hope I made sense! lol I don't want it really redirect, (I've seen where I can do that) I want it to just be www.mysite.com

Thanks

~Stacy

nevermind. I just figured out something wierd myself. I did some changes to my index.htm while I was waiting for an answer from here. Welll, the changes were not uploading. And the stuff on my .shtml file were showing up on the first page of my website. I guess they are one and same afterall.

I had to delete the .shtml file to get my index stuff to upload. Really strange! I guess I'll have to mess around with it.

You do not understand how your web server handles requests for default pages. When you access like this, domain.com/index.php, you are using what is termed an "absolute URL", that is it can go to only one file-index.php. When you access like this, domain.com/, this is a relative url, cause it is relative to how the server is configured. The index pages are displayed relatively in a default order specified in the server config and the server looks for each one by extension in order and serves up the first one found. So if the order is:
index.html index.htm index.shtml index.shtm index.php index.cgi index.pl
You can edit and upload index.shtml until the moon molds and the server will just keep serving up index.html or index.htm

Also, as a quick addition, you can change the priority of default pages by adding the following line to your .htaccess file:

DirectoryIndex index.foo whatever.htm home.html

(with whatever files you want to serve as your defaults).

This will override the server defaults.
