Blog - 05-31-2004, 07:07 PM

I would like to set up a blog on my own site, and I am quite confused. There are blog sites that offer accounts, paid and free, but I think I just want software that handles everything on the site. Since I know almost nothing about the process, even though I played with blogspot.com and some others, I would appreciate hearing whether anyone here has a blog on one of your sites. Since the traffic to the blog would be quite low, I am not interested in the pay-by-the-month plans that seem to be in abundance.

Blogger.com is free. I have an example of that here.

On the other hand, you could use one of several that are one-click installs at P-Z. Go into your control panel, and look at the Fantastico page. There are two categories, Blogs and Content Management.

Once you get there, click on a specific title, and then go to the home site to check out a demo.

I've also used Siteframe and Mambo within the past few months to set up simple web sites. And I like Blogger too.

Nice blog - interesting tips instead of someone's diary I really don't care to read, with opinions and rantings - this one is helpful.

Is this blog physically located on your PZ server? Can you give me a couple of sentences on how you set up and maintain the blog?

I didn't know they were there. Thanks for letting me know.

To set up blogger, go to blogger.com and set up an account. There is a tour at that web site, and a simple process to establish the blog.

The blog page(s) is saved to a folder in your domain that is hosted by P-Z. I believe that I created the folder using CPANEL, and then entered that info when I set up blogger.

At some point in the blogger setup you will enter a username and password that has rights to the folder.

When you want to edit the blog, you login to BLOGGER.COM and their server becomes the intermediary, and puts up an editor that you use.

FYI, I set up blogger before I had access to the blog scripts at P-Z.

If I had to start today, I would probably choose one of the blog scripts in Fantastico.

When I had to decide for myself, I went to the website for each script, and looked around.

I needed something a little bit more than a simple blog for a class, so I picked Siteframe because it allowed multiple users, and was very simple to change the look (to a theme, or skin.) I also found out that a new version is in development, by conversing with the author.

Also look at b2evolution and wordpress.

Support for any software is important, so I also look at forums, and try to get a sense of how friendly that experience would be.

I host a friend of mine's Wordpress Blog. The installation from Fantastico was simple. Wordpress itself is easy to use and full of features.

I host my personal blog on Page-Zone as well. I use Movable Type. Installation is much more involved because you have to do everything manually.

Hope this helps!

Here's my blog: http://mzwp.com

Outdated Version of Wordpress - 06-06-2004, 03:31 PM

Today I installed and have been playing with Wordpress. Unfortunately, the version that Fantastico installed is out of date, and the current (scant) documentation does not even remotely support this version. Does Wordpress require root access to install, or can I install it through CPanel? What is the likelihood that Jim or one of his admins has time to update the version on Ohio?

To upgrade Wordpress, I think all that you need is FTP access to upload the new files that you download from the Wordpress website. Then you run an update script in your browser, and you're done!

I think that the Wordpress website has decent documentation and a forum.

I got it done, but you have to do some database things, too, like clearing it if you had the old version. I'm not sure what WP does on its own and what Fantastico does for you, but at least it is working.

Other Blog Options - 06-14-2004, 11:23 PM

Personally I run geeklog http://www.geeklog.net for my "online diary of rants". I was interested in a php scripted, mysql based blog that I could install and maintain myself. It was a learning experience for me!

I had investigated a bunch of similar packages and here are two others I particularly liked:
Blosxom
http://www.blosxom.com/
GreyMatter
http://www.noahgrey.com/greysoft/
I have used Greymatter on a client's site and it's pretty nice, but I prefer Geeklog!

Moveable Type is by far the most popular I think, but I don't care for it.

Someone on our setup uses Greymatter, and just upgraded to 1.3

I think I have to install something to make it RSS-able, but other than that, it's pretty straightforward. The person that installed it is not a tech-geek. Setting up a specific stylesheet "look" to it was a bit of a pain, but that took a lot of trial and error. The actual workings of it is pretty straightforward.

Greymatter is cgi based.

MT is very popular, but I'm a geeklog fan myself then Pmachine.

Geeklog is great for a community type web site because of all the great plugins. Though I guess phpNuke is another similar product, I just like the ease feel of GeekLog.

PMachine is great for blogging straight up.
