Fantastico install of Gallery - 03-17-2005, 08:27 PM

I'm wondering just how risky is it to use Fantastico to install scripts? It's so nice and easy but it sounds like every time cPanel changes it could get screwed up. Or am I missing the point? Is it OK to use it to install but then do manual updates thereafter? I need to install Gallery on 2 sites and I asked this question over at Gallery and no one has responded.

I'm also wondering if anyone is using Gallery's "Preview" release? Is it safe for production use? This is different from their beta which is clearly not meant for production use.

Thanks,
Sheila

Red face sometimes problems - 03-17-2005, 10:22 PM

I have had some problems with Fantastico installing scripts - but it is my problem, not theirs. Fantastico wants to install in the root directory - period. I want the scripts to be in separate, discrete folders, not combined with everything else in root.

Another problem is the notice that certain scripts need to be upgraded. I clicked on one one time, and got my info wiped out - it wasn't an update that just changed updated files, it was everything! - so I lost a bunch of info and settings. Again, my fault for not backing up.

Also, I've had some scripts install that were one or two versions back, and the security updates needed to be made.

If you didn't do anything 'different' (like me) and just sat back and let it do its thing, probably it would be nice.

Personally, I suggest doing your own manual install. That's my two bytes worth. Nothing against Fantastico - nice program for what it does.

Not using the preview release, but I just noticed I'm behind on a customized gallery install I did. I was tempted to "upgrade" thru Fantastico, but thought of your post. I have changed several things in the theme I'm using. Unfortunately I can't remember for sure if any changes were made to files outside the theme folder. I'll do a full backup first. I started this for fun, but it is more like a system admin job now (without pay.)

My preference is to use fantastico to get an initial install then use whatever upgrade path the author provides to upgrade. This way I have already done an upgrade and can figure out if I like it right away, not waiting until its midnite and a critical patch needs to go. The main reason I do this is so I don't have to muck around creating the DB, not that its a problem, its just time and I'm lazy when I can click it in.

I've only found one script that wants to go into root, we had a thread on it a while back. General concensus was it was a junky app with funky licensing. But...If using a portal type thingy like a nuke or mambo then it should go in root anyways, less to break.

The version of gallery you are refering to is a "release candidate". This generaly means beta is over and it is almost ready so only bugs will be fixed and no new features will be incorporated as it proceeds to RC2.RC3... whatever until a stable release is out. My advice for you would be to go for the RC version as its a fresh install and you dont have to worry about existing data, just getting the script in and working.
