Question Image viewing problems - 03-21-2005, 02:20 PM

Hello,
Some users are getting concerned about image viewing problems that have recently cropped up. It seems that some Web sites are not showing any images while other show all images. For instance, 3 users cannot see any images at all on our main site, www.intra-designs.com, but they can see all the images on another site, www.daffodilvalleytimes.com.
The issue is not browser-specific. One user has a Macintosh using Safari. She could see everything when using an Internet connection from home, but when travelling in the South, she could not see images on some sites.
Another user has Windows XP using IE with the same problems, and a third user has Windows ME and IE.
The problem doesn't seem to be image-specific either. I watched one user go to our main site, and no images came up at all.
So far, the only common factor seems to be that hotlinking is enabled on the sites that these specific users are having problems with. However, there are literally hundreds of other users (including me) that don't have this problem.

Has anyone else seen this?
Have a good one!
Ty

ISP's?

I had problem(s) when I turned on hot-linking protection.

I'm using WinXP pro - but It isn't the OS - I use Firefox as my main browser. I can see all images in both sites with it.

When I switch to MSIE 6, I see all in intra-designs, but the graphic links in daffodil valley are red-x'ed. out. I can see the others.

Opera is like MSIE.

Sometimes things like that bite me, when I design a page and it looks fine in my Firefox, and the client is using MSIE. What design program are you using?

I doubt if it is the ISP.

I'm designing with Macromedia Dreamweaver. I also test every site with Mozilla Firefox and MSIE. I don't have any image problems with eiter sites.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a firewall issue...

Firewall or cacheing by the ISP (AOL or local.) Get the user to load the page fresh. The default cache setting on IE is usually a very large number.

Run your URL thru http://www.danvine.com/icapture/ or similar to check Safari. You could have more than one interaction with the users.

It's not caching, at least not local machine. I watched the problem once. I completely cleaned out the cache and history (on MSIE), and the images still wouldn't come up.

the other user (the one who uses Safari) didn't have a problem until she was in an airport down South using their connection. That's why I was thinking it might have something to do with a firewall (local router or such). I could easily be wrong, it was just a thought.

I can say that the issue goes away when hotlinking is turned off.

From the description is would seem that a conflict arises when a proxy server tries to get a graphic when hot link protection is on as it is seen as a third party. You could get the proxys IP/URL and add it to the allow list. Won't help for strange airports but should if a clients proxy is the problem.
