Problems transfering Gallery away from PZ - 05-31-2005, 09:09 PM

I have a client who I installed Gallery for, then they decided to move their hosting elsewhere. I installed it in early April. I can't recall if I used Fantastico or did it manually. I think I did it manually. I have no idea what version but I know at the time I posted asking about possibly using the beta verses the newest RC. I installed it, customized it to match the site, etc. Then the new techie (non-designer) moved the site to new hosting. This was supposedly because they had so much trouble with the email with PZ (bullsh*t, they simply are technologically impaired).

Today, a month after the site was moved I get a letter from the client saying that I'd installed an "obsolete" version of the Gallery script and it had cost them $500 extra for their new guy to transfer it because the new host required the newest version of Gallery.

So here's what the techie wrote to my old client:
Quote:
The problem I'm having with the Gallery are 2-fold. First, it uses invisible files which are hard to move. Second, Sheila created your photo album using an obsolete version of the application, which means I not only have to move it, I have to upgrade it at the same time, while still maintaing the work she did to make it look like the rest of your site.
Anyone have any thoughts, comments, insights? Have you ever moved Gallery from one server to another? I don't know what invisible files he's talking about. They would've been fine if they'd just left the hosting with me and had this guy help them with their email. Oh well....

Thanks,
Sheila

Did you install it at the new host? That's not clear.

You have a contract to provide them hosting and design, and it sounds like it worked at P-Z. When they decided to move it elsewhere, they take on the responsibility to make it work at the new location.

Nothing is "invisible" to a real techie.

Thanks Ed. NO, I didn't move it the new guy did. I was just reading in the Gallery FAQ and it looks pretty easy to migrate. They do say something about if it's from a Linux to Windows it must be version 4 or higher but I'm sure it was at least 4 and I think the new server is also Linux. They're now with Host Rocket.

Basically I told them exactly what you said. It worked here and I didn't know at the time I did it they were planning to move. So it's on them!

Don't you jus hate it when a person tries to justify their turf at your expense?

I think your best answer is like Ed said and you did: it was working fine while hosted here. Any changes made were your responsibility. "Hidden files" - what a joke.

I can see they will have challenges if they move from linux to windoze. I have two clients using FP and it is a pain. Talk about hidden files!

Good luck. My nemisis has usually been the Ad agency smart alecks who think they know everything and can screw up a site faster than lightning.

I just got a response from the new techie guy:
Quote:
The version on Hostrocket now is 1.4.4. I don't recall what the version was when I got the copies, but it was pre MySQL, so it was a significant upgrade. The hidden files were the user/password files. Moving them required command line FTP. I did use the Gallery FAQ instructions, but they were only helpful to a point.
I don't know how it's possible it was pre MySQL if I installed it in April. All my other installs are version 1.4.4. They're different release candidates. Any idea what version Fantastico installs? Maybe I used it and it was REALLY old? And I gave him the user name and password so I don't get why that was a challenge.

Thanks for listening!
Sheila

The quote from this techie is excuses and inaccuracy. You may have had an older version, but it was mysql. How could it have been anything else? I remember a version 1.2 or 1.3 from a year ago, but that would not be an obstacle for a "techie." As for hidden files, almost every FTP program has an option to display hidden folders, and that will show the albums/.users directory.

They are throwing all of this at you, trying to find a way to bill YOU for what THEY should know. Is this techie from the hosting co. or is it a consultant?

That's what I thought too, Ed. Thanks!
He's an independant person, not from the hosting company.
