Please upgrade or disable outdated php scripts - 03-17-2007, 03:39 PM

I saw this in announcements today. I expected such announcements would come by email to my non-Page-Zone account, where I would be sure to see them.

Again, just because I happened to come by the forum, I saw it. When I am travelling, and on dial-up, I do not come here, because the forum server is often so slow, and I rely on email.

My servers and my computer software can send me email when they have something important to tell me -- and I can even get my house to send me email if the furnace quits -- so why can't Page-Zone seem to get it together to do that simple thing?

I have subscribed to the email announcement list and was subscribed to the announcements in the forum, but have not been receiving any emails.

So, I checked my forum options and found that I was unsubscribed from the forum announcements and I re-subscribed again, however, I notice that I can have weekly or daily emails from the forum, but not just an email when there is something new. Do I really need constant emails to tell me there is nothing new? Or wait a week to get an announcement that something big isd up. For example that global change to default email addresses would have really screwed me if I hadn't just happened by here.

Assuming that these announcements are important, let me repeat what I have posted before: these announcements need to go out by email to our fail-safe email addresses, not just be posted here, where many of us may not come across them.

How about it?

I sent out 1,990 emails the day before we made the switch. You should have been on the list, it was built fresh less than two months ago. We ("we" meaning Lindsay) manually typed in every current customer into the list for their particular server from our paper billing files.

Before we added every customer there was about 5-10 people per server signed up for each server's list. I don't think we have 1,990 customers which seems to indicate there must be more than one email on file with a lot of customers and we put all of them into the list. So there was probably a lot of people that received two.

One additional mistake was not doing that change a few years ago, but I appologize for nearly causing you a huge mail problem.

OK. Thanks, Jim. All's well that ends well.

Nonetheless, I did not get the announcement, and I did ensure doubly long ago that Penny had two separate, valid and non-Page-Zone email addresses to contact us in case of billing problems, and that was even confirmed at the time.

Still I got no email notification this time, and I am totally sure no SPAM filter ate it, since I scan the reject lists for familiar senders.

Maybe you could check your list and PM me as to what you have on file?

Thanks.

I'd like to pursue this issue with Announcement emails. I always get mine late - or not at all. Like the one in this thread's subject. I never got that one, either.

And then last night (after 22:00 MDT), I was doing something on my site along with my daughter on the phone and my site quit working. I started checking around - finally got through to netstatus: http://www.rehost.us/netstatus/ and saw that almost all servers (South Bend) were down. Before long (ten minutes?), my site was up again. Five minutes after that, I got the email that was supposed to inform me about a new post to the Announcements forum (posted at 15:04 MST - 7 hours earlier) explaining that the South Bend sites would go down for 1 to 2 minutes sometime at night.

I've seen this delay before - like half a day to get an email notifying me of a new post in Announcements. Is there any way to fix that?

Chuck

Jim, I haven't received any email. I am on server list, and also my billing email should work. If the email comes through, I'll be sure to post a reply here.

The fact that they are going out late, and some people aren't getting any at all point to a definite problem with the Page-Zone server. Also a few people have now complained about the forum being slow. I'll have to move it off of the network it's on and probably a faster server. And try to clean up a lot of the noise going on with the name as far as incoming email is concerned. I just have to figure out where to put the server so its still on a separate network and electrical grid as our other servers.

I have two places in mind up in Michigan.

Oh, and BTW, I did update my phpBBs. It was a pain, since they were installed using Fantastico, then Fantastico failed to see them later on and I have had to do the upgrades manually.

Moreover, the phpBB site does not make upgrades simple, rather they provide large packages and non-specific instructions. The job is simple, but they don't make it look that way. If they just had a link and instructions for the latest upgrade instead of burying it in a tonne of other stuff...

I'd be interested to see how many outdated phpBBs there are now. For one thing, tthat would show how ow effective the announcements were.

Right before Christmas I signed up on a couple server lists using my earthlink address, which has been pretty reliable. Those initial activation messages came through fine.

On March 10, I got the notice below, from the server lists. This was the only "server mailing" I've received since Christmas.

Steve

Not sure what browser you're using, but I find the easiest way to keep on top of posts here is to use the site's built in RSS feed. In Firefox (and now IE7?) it's really easy to have a 'live bookmark' up on the toolbar that you can pull down and glance at the latest headlines from time to time.

I'm using this one:

Allen,
The count is probably just about the same - minus the ones you updated. It's somewhat comforting to know that I checked a few of the pages that came up on that initial search and they were disabled already. phpbb has a way of dying on its own when the sessions table gets full. The check I ran didn't go to the sites, it crawed the mysql databases and pulled version numbers from those.

Nate - shows how smart I am, I didn't know the forum script even had an RSS feed.

I hope this does not preclude making sure that notification emails get sent out in a more timely fashion. It makes more sense to be notified when significant information becomes available (announcements from admin/support), than it does to keep monitoring a feed regularly (... just in case).

1. Besides, in response to http://www.page-zone.com/forums/external.php?type=RSS2, Firefox says:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it.
The document tree is shown below.

That is followed by a raw XML file that is far from readable. I'm sure I can fix that, but .....

2. It appears that I would still have to check in regularly in order not to miss announcements in a timely fashion.

3. There are times when I am away from my own computer for days at a time, but still getting email.

Is there any reason why notification emails can not be sent out promptly (instead of being delayed half a day)?

Chuck

@Chuck - 1. you're probably using an older version of Firefox (pre-2.0) which didn't handle RSS the same way. When I click on that link, a window pops up which says "Add Live Bookmark?"
2. Yes - I check my feeds throughout the day.
3. There are a number of rss to email apps that might be employed (by you or by Jim) to automate the process so that things only need to be posted in one place. Seems a big waste of time to maintain two notification systems. Here are two examples of services that will do that for you:
RssFwd : Reading RSS the way you are already reading your emails
Rmail

@Jim - Another bigger hosting company I use doesn't notify via email at all. All notifications of planned service outages or upgrades are posted on their 'blog' which also provides an RSS feed like this one does. The real point here is that everyone would like PZ to plan their changes and upgrades a couple days in advance so users have time to plan and notify their own customers of impending changes. It probably wouldn't matter much if you notify via email or web if the notices were always posted at least 3 days before a change was implemented. Obviously we can't expect emergency changes to be handled the same way however.

I just added an RSS account to Thunderbird with the link Nate posted. I'm still not sure what this does. I get what appears to be an email that contains the text of the first post in a thread.

Also, ... the vBulletin FAQ says I can select a forum id.

http://www.page-zone.com/forums/exte...2&forumids=123

How do I get the forum id? I will probably only want a feed from the Announcements forum.

Chuck
