SPAM Assassin Alternative? - 08-29-2007, 10:18 AM

Since it seems this is never going to work again, at least not on a consistent basis, what our options to protect our servers from SPAM? Is there anything we can install or do I just have to relying pop'ing and filtering that way?

Turning off Spam Assassin? - 08-31-2007, 07:29 AM

I'd settle for the ability to disable Spam Assassin and deal with the spam myself. I tried the "disable" button in cPanel. It responds "Spam Assassin is now Enabled." I've tried the configuration tools section as well. None of them have any effect.

What is the secret (other than finding a different hosting company)?

Are there any plans to fix this? I've had some support tickets open for quite a while on SpamAssassin issues.

I'm about fed up as well. If SPAM Assassin isn't going to work with Cpanel... fine. But what is the plan for an alternative SPAM filtering? The lack of SPAM filtering and the slowness of my web sites is not making me a very happy customer.

Put in some support tickets. Call Page-Zone and leave a message. Do whatever you can to make your feelings known directly to Jim Snapes.

They have to fix this. I don't want to move my site because it is a huge messy job that will break all kinds of stuff. So I have to put up with it.

Remember also that this is a very low-budget hosting service and these issues are part of the cost of doing business with them

SpamAssassin seems to be working perfectly for me now, but you need to set up a few server-side rules in Cpanel. I used to have everything go to a spam folder, but I'm pretty confident with SA's results lately (along with some additions to the user_prefs file). I just have all my spam deleted now.

What are you seeing?

...from URLIB transient blacklistings or something. I wrote to URLIB about it and they said it was a Page-Zone problem. I forwarded that and they seem to have fixed.

The problem now is that they turned off BoxTrapper. I relied on that to catch most of the crap that went to my public mailbox.

Now I am getting tons of spam. I guess I'll have to set SpamAssasin to stun. I hate the thought of having to kill that mailbox. All my newsletters and list mail and god knows what else will have to be changed.

I don't know. It's all too much for me today.

I understand your concern. I actually cranked up the spam assessment of open relays and black lists. I'm probably going to use the server side rules to /dev/null anything with a spam score of 10 and above and let anything below that hit the spam folder to a little safer.
