transfering .htaccess? - 12-11-2002, 08:36 PM

One of the sites I want to move over here has a significant .htaccess file that password protects a member area. I've never manually worked with it. The current host has an interface where I add/edit/delete entries line by line. Is there any way for me to move that file over w/o loosing the information? It'd be a real pain to have to re-create the entire thing. Thanks for any tips.

Sheila

I have no first hand experience with this but I would assume that if you can ftp the current .htaccess file down to your system then just upload it to your new domain it should work just fine. Once in place you can edit in place from within file manager. Paths should be fine as long as place the .htaccess in the proper folder.

Yes, if you log in with the -a switch set you should be able to see the files which begin with a dot (.htaccess) Just download it from the old server and upload it top the new. Do the same thing with the corresponding .htpasswd file making sure to put the .htpasswd file in the directory that it is supposed to be in. For security reasons it is probably sitting outside of public_html with the path to it specified in .htaccess

Both are plain text files, so download and upload in ascii mode.

Thanks guys. I suspect it isn't going to be quite that straight forward. I checked the .htaccess file in the folder that is protected and that isn't it. Then I checked the .htaccess file in the root and that also isn't it. There are 3 other files in the root and one of them is actually the login info for the members. Their passwords are encrypted. Hopefully if I copy all of these files over to the same places it'll work. I don't know if the encryption will continue to be readable once transfered. One of these files lists the directories in the "realm" that is protected. I can't tell what the other files even do. I guess the only way to know is try the move and see what happens.

if you have access to the site's root, in FTP, can't you just ftp/transfer the .htaccess file to your system? I ought to be a simple ascii file. Mine are.

However, I may not know the full picture. I've never had to use a "-a" switch Jim mentioned...hmmm.
