Invision calendar - 12-19-2002, 09:13 PM

I've done test installs using Fantasico of the PHP-BB & Invision. As far as I can tell the PHP-BB doesn't include a calendar. When I go to the home page for the Invision product theirs appears to have a calendar. However, my install doesn't show one. Is this a new feature? If so will our version be upgraded soon? I have a new client who wants a board WITH a calendar. I hate to have to pay for VBulletin if Invision will do the trick. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks
Sheila

I just got a reply over at Invision that I do need to upgrade. The calendar is new with ver. 1.1. So my question stands...when will we have this upgrade available via Fantastico install?

Thanks,

Upgrade is easy - 12-19-2002, 10:49 PM

I have both boards and neither was the latest version.

But it was not that hard to upgrade both of them.

For the phpBB - they have a lot of downloads to select from at their site. But there is one just for 'changed' files (that is the easy way IMHO). Then the instructions tell you how to upload the few files and how to run the 'upgrade'

The Invision board has a much larger download - you basically have to get all the setup .php, skins etc. .. then you have to over write all the files. But their instructions are clear (they repeat them several times and had double checks for you make sure you have the files all uploaded in correct place. Then you run their 'upgrade' program.

Both upgrades keep all you post / members etc. i.e. I did not lose a thing in the upgrade.

Summary: I think these type scripts change so often that I suspect it would be difficult to try to keep them all current in the cPanel. But once you get one version installed - it's really not that hard to upgrade. Plus you'll then know what to expect when they make their next change

John:

Thanks for the response. It's good to know the upgrades are pretty easy. I've installed many perlscripts before but not any php.

Jim: I would still like to know when/IF we're going to see the upgrade via Fantastico. It was just soooo simple to install it that way compared to intalling a script from scratch and worrying about CMODs etc.

Thanks,
Sheila

php is easier than perl/cgi - 12-21-2002, 10:14 AM

One of the reasons I'm using more php instead of perl/cgi is because it is easier to setup /install than cgi scripts.

In this case, you don't have to worry about MySQL - just have to upload the newer files and run the 'upgrade' file from your browser.

No permissions to set / worry about. No need to work with MySQL (their script re-builds the necessary tables).

FYI: As far as upgrading, I used the latest stable release but they already have another beta - so as soon as the Fantastico is upgraded - it's going to be behind again.

Invision Board - 12-21-2002, 11:21 AM

Sheila, be aware that the upgrade for the Invision board to v1.1 is still a beta release so be aware of what that means.

I wrote to the folks on the Fantastico support Forum and asked when the version of Invision Board included with Fantastico will be updated to 1.1? I told them "just found out that 1.1 is still beta. I suppose your answer would be not until it comes out of beta. If that's the case, how much after that is it likely to happen?"

They responded as follows:

most software is beta. If you wait, you will never install anything

Yes, people must wait for my updates to be able to install the latest versions, and no, I will not send out the less important x.x.x.1 updates. But there is a hole in the past month, since the new fantastico version is being developed and the updates have been missing. Some customers have asked so I will update to the newest versions in the next days. But your host must also do the work and update the tarballs or you will notice no difference.

So Jim, when it comes out, I trust you'll do the necessary tarball updates? Thanks.

Sheila

Sheila, the new Invision board is no doubt better than the previous one, but the calendar is not such an attractive feature to upgrade expecially for it. (even if it is seamless with the board)

A number of php/perl calendar scripts with much more flexibility and features are available. They can be blended into your current webdesign too.

So If I were you, I would update to the current release of Invision (although Beta) but go in for a stand-alone calender script.

Cheers!
