web protect for password entry

Is it possible to use 'Web Protect' with user passwords?
I know that I can protect a directory so that I can punch in a password to get in, but what if I wanted to set it up for other users? Would I just email them the password or something?

probably the most common and easiest.

Another is to use a CGI or other program that generates passwords for users. I like the first because you can change it easy - but then other users need to know if you do change it.
