Remaining Redirect Questions - 02-21-2003, 05:14 PM

Thanks again to all who contributed to my "parent-child site" query a week ago. I am just about ready to open a reseller acount and set up the framework for what I need, but the two points below are still fuzzy to me:

Basic issue: How to get the URL for forwarded domain to hop to an interior page of the target site, instead of its root directory?

a. One of you said this redirect-to-interior thing could be done with Java scripting, but probably best not to try it with Front Page extensions. Do you KNOW that Front Page is incompatible with this "Java hop" or is it just that you have never seen it done? Ergo, should I attempt a trial before giving up? (If it's just plain not possible, then I will hand-code the self-parked sites which need this scripting, and save Front Page for my fully hatched 'parent' domains.)

b. In any event, is there some place at PZone where I can see the Java script I would need to use to achieve this, or do I need to go web surfing to get the how to's? If the latter, is there any place you can point me to learn more?

Thanks again!

Carla

Point domain to subdirectory - 02-21-2003, 09:22 PM

The fact that nobody's answering the note above makes me wonder if it's about how I put it.

Stated even more simply, I just need to point a domain to a subdirectory, e.g. Joe.com flips to mydoman.com/Joe.

I have done domain pointing before via mydns.com.. but the problem there is that a 'regular' redirect just lands at the top page of mydomain, rather than hopping inside to Joe's page.

Somebody said this could be handled with a Java script, hence my "remaining queries" above about where I might find such a script to give it a try.

I read your post and was trying to think of a way to do it without javascript. I'm not familiar with the WHM software since I dont have the reseller package.

as far as javascript goes, I did a simple search on google and came up with a ton of links. Heres one example

http://www.codeproject.com/jscript/d...javascript.asp

The search terms i used on google were:
javascript redirect per domain

Hope ya find something that works for you.

Bless you Craig! That just may do the trick.

I did my own Google, but my search terms weren't as apt as yours. I got flipped to pages discussing how ISPs could set up virtual servers using Apache, and my eyes soon started to glaze.

Meanwhile, to make this topic complete I should also admit that since posting this AM I went back and checked at mydns.com. Turns out, whatever the issue used to be years ago when I first started using them, now I can foward a domain to any site or page or subdirectory with their control panel. Can forward email too. It's even free. No ads or nuttin. You just have to use their name servers, which I have done for 3 or 4 years now for one domain, no problemo.

So you can sign me off with a sheepish grin that the problem was even more simply solved.. but if I ever do need that Java script, now I also know where to grab one <grin2>
