Static IP queries - 02-21-2003, 07:19 PM

If I do decide to pay extra for a static IP from PZone, will ALL the sites in my reseller account resolve to this same IP?

And does having a fixed IP for a site make you more vulnerable to hackers trying to "relay" their spam using bogus IDs? Or is the "spam relay" thing unrelated to the IP of a site?

No.

And having a dedicated IP doesn't make you any more vulnerable because all leaving the mail server uses the same IP anyway, even if you have a dedicated IP for your website.

Shared vs Static cont. - 02-21-2003, 07:53 PM

Thanks, Jim. Obviously I still have a lot to learn about infrastructure basics.

One of serveral reasons I am interested in static IPs is my prior experience with shared hosting. A few times my main site was blocked by filters at libraries and in schools not because of MY content, but because my host had others of dubious value on the same server. It was a royal pain to figure this out, track it down and get them to give me a waiver.

Granted, this was 2-3 years ago, and maybe the mechanics of sharing servers has changed in the interim. Does using a dynamic IP still run this risk today?

Its not really a dynamic IP. You still have a static IP, its just a static IP that is shared between sites.

As far as the problem that you mentioned, it really depends on who's doing the blocking. People will block things in all sorts of weird ways. The way those libraries were doing it isn't really one of the best, and I doubt you will ever see any problems as a result of a shared IP.
