PhpBB install problem - 02-26-2003, 09:14 PM

Hello all.

I'm new here and to MySQL databases. I've checked the back posts, the websites & the documentation but nothing addresses my problem.

I'm installing a phpBB and it uses a database. MySQL says that is grayhawk_xmb1 & user name is the same, but when I try to install it cant find the database. Here is the install text.

Welcome to phpBB 2 Installation

Thank you for choosing phpBB 2. In order to complete this install please
fill out the details requested below. Please note that the database you install into should already exist. If you are installing to a database that uses ODBC, e.g. MS Access you should first create a DSN for it
before proceeding.

Basic Configuration

Default board language: English
Database Type: MySQL 3.x
Choose your installation method: Install

Database Configuration

Database Server Hostname / DSN: localhost
Your Database Name: grayhawk_xmb1
Database Username: grayhawk_xmb1
Database Password: same as login pw
Prefix for tables in database: phpbb_

Admin Configuration

Admin Email Address: grayhawk@hawkaerie.com
Domain Name: www.hawkaerie.com
Server Port: 80
Script path: /mlmforum/
Administrator Username: grayhawk
Administrator Password: same as login pw
Administrator Password [ Confirm ]: same as login pw

I get a pop-up window asking which CP version Password I am changing
though I'm not changing any. Then I get the following:

Error Message
phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

Looking in xmb folder I find:
mlmforum xmb1 2.0.2

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you

Have fun all,

Hello Fireeater,

Thanks for your reply. I'm not using Fantastico for the install and it seems my problem was due to inexperience with MySQL databases.

The PhpBB install creates a database called user_xmb1 and the user name is the same but it seems it doesn't do the final MySQL admin step of assigning permission so here's what I did.... after
much experimentation creating new databases and users

I deleted the forum, database and users to begin again clean.
Then I reinstalled PhpBB from the Control Panel. The database again was grayhawk_xmb1 with a user grayhawk_xmb1.
I deleted the user then readded user xmb1 which gave me the same setup but now grayhawk_xmb1 had a password.
Then I used the last step from the MySQL tutorial and granted grayhawk_xmb1 access.
This seems to be the missing link, I finally got by that PhpBB install screen.
I got another screen asking me to install config_php, which I did... twice because the auto install fails as it can't
overwrite existing files, but manual install using file manager upload with overwrite enabled works,
This solved the problem and now http://hawkaerie.com/mlbforum exists.

Thanks again & I have learned a bit.
