Transfering Domain Name - 09-02-2002, 07:38 AM

I have never transfered a domain name before. What is the quickest and easiest way to do this and what is the best site to use for transfering names?

Also, when you first register a domain name and if you do not have a website yet, will you still need to transfer the name?

Do you mean transferring a domain name between registrars? I just transferred some domain names from Network Solutions to Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com). Its was pretty easy. Go Daddy charges $7.75 for a one year extension to the existing registration period.

I've heard good things about godaddy.com from many sources, though I haven't used them. From recent personal experience I can strongly recommend gandi.net - cheap and efficient. They sucessfully got my domain out of Verisign's claws. The new registrar handles the transfer for you, by the way, so you shouldn't need to contact your current registrar.

If possibly, before you transfer, make sure the Technical Contact email is your own address - this can speed things with some registrars (verisign).

Yes, you can register the domain name before you have a website (ie a host like page-zone) - I did. When you have a host, you need to get a DNS address (or two) from them and give it to the registrar (eg godaddy/gandi.net), by typing it into a form on the registrar's site.
