Invision and phpBB Email Notification - 05-02-2003, 11:13 AM

I've set up both Invision and phpBB discussion boards. I can't get the "email notification of replies" to work on either board.

Do I need to change the SMTP settings to get this to work?

Thanks.

Also. . .

Will either of these boards send you the text, by email, of every new message that appears on the board? (Similar to a mailing list)

For your question:

No - or at least I didn't and I use both of those boards.

However, on the phpBB - I only see the option to receive copies of the replies - which is really all I ever wanted on that board. (it's too busy for copies of every post). So I'm not sure if there is a way to subscribe to EVERY post.

On my Invision board (low volume) it does have an option to subscribe to a thread AND / Or to a topic. I had to try a couple of times before I got it the way I wanted i.e. subscribed to the entire topic so I get notice of all post.

As far as receiving complete copy - I've not looked at both support sites for phpBB and Invision in a while - but I do remember reading of a 'mod' for this feature at one of them (I think Invision - but you should be able to do a search in either support forum and find the answer)

BTW: You didn't ask - but I like the look n feel of phpBB for the administration better than the Invision. But a lot of reviewers like Invision better - perhaps more features and larger support forum with more 'mods' Just my $0.02

When a reply notification email is sent, is it immediate? I still have not got the reply to work. Is there some way to debug it??

Yes - notification is immediate for me
------
You didn't say which board? I'll assume (guess) that you are talking about phpBB. If so, I'll guess:
----------

After you log in - did you check your profile settings and make sure that this section is checked:

Quote:
Always notify me of replies:
Sends an email when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. This can be changed whenever you post
----------
maybe check the email in your profile - send a test message from another php script to see if it's working. For example, you could make a php contact form and use the same address - that would be one method of debug i.e. use another php script.
---------
or maybe change the email in your profile - try another address ?
---------

------------
If it's the invision board - log in and double check your subscriptions
