Net Neutrality - 07-08-2006, 04:54 PM

This is about politics and those trying to control the internet.

Here's an article from Wired.com- following a speach by Senator Stevens in the US Senate at the end of June.
Quote:
Your Own Personal Internet

The Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked 11 to 11 on an amendment inserting some very basic net neutrality provisions into a moving telecommunications bill. The provisions didn't prohibit an ISP from handling VOIP faster than emails, but would have made it illegal to handle its own VOIP packets faster than a competitor's.

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explained why he voted against the amendment and gave an amazing primer on how the internet works.

I'd rate this one of the best well written articles, summarizing the opposing views, on the subject of Net Neutrality.

Senators Hear Grassroots Drumbeat on Net Neutrality

Quote:
Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) spoke before the Senate on Friday to “outline what is at stake” should Congress ignore public opinion and let phone and cable companies gut Net Neutrality.

Thus far powerful phone and cable companies have spent an estimated $100 million on lobbyists, lawyers, “Astroturf” groups, campaign contributions and advertising agencies in a drive to dismantle Net Neutrality and mislead Americans.

That means that for every $1 spent by the grassroots to defend Net Neutrality, the phone and cable companies have spent approximately $500 to drown it.

Still, public sentiment is tipping against their scheme to turn the “pipes” into private toll roads.

Thanks for the links Ed.

Now my Senators know how I feel about the debate on Net Neutrality. :-)

Both Senators from Ohio are showing up in the undecided category. My fear is that lobbyist have a lot of impact on politicians (on technical issues anyway) and obviously there's big money involved with these decisions.
