Hosting Subdomains on Another Server - 08-15-2008, 11:46 PM

Using WHM 'edit a dns zone' link a subdomain can be directed to another server IP. This is usefull if you want to set up a different server such as a Windows server or any service at another location.

For instance, you want to use your permanent or semi-permanent home IP to serve up some type of website or service.

Log into WHM - Edit a dns zone
Add the subdomain name on the left and the IP that will be serving the content on the right.

Click SAVE

Now any time someone types
http://example.yourdomain.tld
or
ftp://example.yourdomain.tld
etc... they will connect to that IP.

Adding a remote mail service example. For instance, you want to set up the mail to go to your home server, or some other server.

Create a subdomain
Make that subdomain the MX record for mail.

Note the terminating dots in the example subdomain.yourdomain.com .

Also, this will not direct ALL mail, spammers sometimes ignore MX records knowing that if the server serving the domain also accepts mail it might have a better chance of bypassing spam filters if they ignore the MX ip and send to the IP that the website resolves to.
