Email to text message - carrier domain name syntax - 01-30-2007, 01:36 AM

Looking to send certain emails to your phone? For instance 'emergency@yourdomain.tld' but but know how?

Simply set up a forwarder for that email address to forward to your cell phone's text massaging mechanism.

First - the email address emergency@yourdomain.tld needn't be an actual email account which you set up - it can be set up as just a forwarder. That way there will be no mail box collecting mail, it will get to the server and forward right out to your cell phone.

Second - make sure you aren't charged on a per text message fee schedule or you could be surprised at the end of the month. Especially if the forwarder gets a lot of spam. It's a good idea to know what the text message LIMIT is before the carrier begins charging a fee for each message over that limit.

Next you need to know where to forward the mail to. If you don't already know, here's a big list:

In most cases the word "number" is replaced with the full ten digit phone number. If it doesn't work the info is probably outdated for that carrier. Contact them for further support.

This list is bound to become outdated and if your provider isn't listed here feel free to add it below. Most of the ones we didn't list either don't have the capability or require registration for the service first.

Also keep in mind most carriers will limit the amount of characters to 150 or less so if your message appears to be truncated - that is the reason. If setting up a web based form to send to your cell phone in this manner its a gtood idea to make the subject VERY short and limit the amount of text that can be entered so the person typing into that form is forced to get to the point in 100 or less characters.

You wouldn't want something like this showing up (truncated) in your text message box:

Hi Bob,
This is your doctor. How are you? I am fine. On my way to Burmuda and will be unreachable for 12 weeks. The reason I'm sending this is because your test results are in and you MUST immedia~[END]
