Viewing sites before domain name transfer

Used to be you could view sites on the server before the domain name propageted or was transferred (for new clients who alread have sites) by the following www.wwwservername.com/~username but that does not seem to work, or has my brain gone soft?
Any help with this?

works for me

On servers 9 and 16, I can get to my domains by:
http://my_servers_ip_address/~username/

try it with 216.180.243.26
